Do Not Set Weight Loss Goals For 2024 And Here Is The Reason

As we enter a new year, the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions is an age-old ritual for many of us. We often find ourselves contemplating health and wellness resolutions; however, the unfortunate reality is that by the time January ends, many of these resolutions, particularly those related to weight loss and fitness, have already been abandoned! Does this sound familiar?
Setting resolutions is akin to setting goals, and once you achieve one goal, you move on to the next, striving for continuous self-improvement and personal growth. However, goals often fail because we find it difficult to comply, perhaps due to overly ambitious targets or unforeseen obstacles.
A renowned author of the book “The Atomic Habits” quotes, “Winners and losers have the same goals; the difference lies in how winners create Systems.”

Now, let's explore why setting a goal, especially a weight loss goal, might not be the best approach:

Setting a goal means you are constantly chasing something, often leading to a constant state of perceived failure, frustration, and misery. Generally, the cycle is: set a goal → achieve it → set a bigger goal, but this can lead to a never-ending cycle of dissatisfaction.
Instead, focusing on building a healthy lifestyle system can yield better results. But how do you go about building these systems? Well, it’s highly personalized, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
Here are three key steps to help:

  1. Determine the direction you want to go in.
  2. Find out how to get there and ask the right questions.
  3. Experiment with the answers and readjust.
For instance, consider my client Radha, who has struggled with PCOS and weight loss. For her, exercising and maintaining a balanced diet became her system instead of just a goal to lose weight.
We tailored Radha’s routine to fit her life as a busy IT professional and mother. This involved experimenting with her exercise schedule, like splitting her workout into morning and evening sessions.
Radha’s focus on the system, rather than just the goal, proved more effective for her weight loss journey. We continuously reviewed and adjusted her routine for optimal progress.
Just like Radha, you can create your system to stick to your New Year’s resolutions.
